Digital Entrepreneurship: What Is It & How To Get Started

Have you ever seen an image of a girl lounging on the beach, sipping a martini and working on her computer? Did that make you sigh in longing and envy? Digital entrepreneurship has become an overwhelmingly popular career path, as more and more people desire the benefits that internet careers provide.

What is a digital entrepreneur? A digital entrepreneur is someone who works online, either by selling products or offering services. Digital entrepreneurs can work anywhere as long as there is an internet connection, unlike your standard brick and mortar employees.

Why Become A Digital Entrepreneur?

We live in an age where everything is online. Because of this, it’s easier than ever before to work online. There is also a lot of flexibility in what you can do and offer people to earn a living online. Most people want to become an online entrepreneur because of the flexibility it offers them, as well as the ability to work from anywhere. Your reason why is personal, but it’s something you should always keep in mind. A strong why for any venture will help you obtain success, because it will push you forward when times are tough.

Business Idea

The first step to becoming a successful digital entrepreneur is to have an idea of what you are going to be doing online. Will you be selling from a virtual store? Blogging? Social media management? The first step is to be extremely clear on what you do, why you do it and who you’re doing it for. One of the biggest things you have to do is know who your target audience is. Who are you trying to reach? For example, it’s not enough to decide you want to sell online courses. Who are these courses for? What problems do they solve?

Your branding is how people perceive you. This is done mainly visually, and includes your logo, your website and your marketing materials. It’s best to invest in your branding, because you won’t become a successful entrepreneur without your best foot forward. Your brand is your business card to the world, so it needs to be clearly defined and visually beautiful. Branding that isn’t clearly defined or doesn’t attract your ideal client will result in no sales and no conversions, period. This is one of the areas you’re going to want to invest in first. You can only go so far in your business without an effective branding strategy.

Marketing and Email Marketing

A marketing strategy is the perfect way to get the word out there about your online business. There are multiple marketing strategies you can use. These include blogging to help build authority and trust in your audience, ad campaigns, social media marketing and email marketing. There are many types of marketing, and most businesses employ multiple marketing tactics. The point of marketing is to move clients through your sales funnel. Your sales funnel is simply the path a client or customer takes to find your business, and eventually purchase from you. Depending on your business, this looks slightly different. But the goal is the same.

One of the most effective ways is to create an email list. Email marketing is a great way to build authority and trust in your brand. You can utilize paid ads, offer freebies, or write a blog to help create your list and spread the word. The great thing about email marketing, is that if your webpage or social media crashes, you still have access to your target clients and audience without having to start completely over. You can use websites like Mailchimp to build your list and send out emails as part of a well rounded strategy. Like branding, your marketing strategy is something you’ll want to invest in, especially if you have never started a business before. It’ll save you a lot of time in the long run.

Social Media Presence

Everyone is on social media these days, and for good reason! Social media helps connect all of us in a way that has never been done before. Social media is definitely an essential part of your marketing strategy. Your ideal clients won’t find you if you aren’t out there making your presence known. You need to be engaging on multiple platforms, so that people know you are an option for them. You also position yourself as a leader in your industry when you utilize social media correctly. Instagram, Facebook and Pinterest are amazing platforms to start with. It’s important to do your research, and determine the best platforms for your business. This blueprint teaches you how to use social media to drive traffic and leads to your sales page.

Mastering Mindset

One of the keys to becoming a successful digital entrepreneur is to master your mindset. This is the key to success in general, but it’s extra important to an entrepreneurial journey. Your words can help shape your reality. It’s important to make sure you are confident in yourself and your abilities, and that will show through all you do online, attracting your ideal clients and ending in more conversions and money.

I’m going to be honest with you- this isn’t an easy gig. Being a digital entrepreneur isn’t all fun and games. It’s easy to procrastinate with no one watching behind your shoulder, and sometimes you don’t find the results you are looking for. You aren’t guaranteed a wage per hour, you have to get out and find your clients to make the money. That is why perseverance is so important. It helps encourage you to keep going, despite your doubts and fears. Nothing is instantly successful, and it’s ok to feel frustrated. But to become a successful digital entrepreneur, you have to push through those feelings and keep going.

Portfolio and Testimonials

Portfolios are essential if you have a service based business. Portfolios are similar to a storefront. It shows examples of what you do and how the end result looks. This is an important way to build trust and authority with your ideal clients. With the portfolio, you’ll want to get testimonials from people. Testimonials are amazing because not only will your ideal clients know you can do the job, but that you are good to work with as well. Sometimes you may need to offer your services for free in exchange for testimonials. It’s ok to do this, but only a few times at most. Get the social proof you need, and then your ideal clients will have the confidence in your ability to pay for your services.

Time Management

In order to get all your work done, you’re going to need to learn time management skills. There are many ways to manage your time, and it’s mostly a matter of preference. One thing you can try is having multiple calendars. In one, write down all your appointments and calls. In the other, write down all the work you need to do for the day. A lot of business owners incorporate batching. Batching is simply doing all like minded tasks at the same time. For example, choose one or two times a day to read and respond to email, or create all your media content for the week in one sitting. This helps the brain stay focused and organized, making your job a little easier.

Maybe it’s your dream to sit in a cafe in Paris and do work while eating a Parisian baguette. Maybe you simply want the luxury to do your work in your pajamas on your couch at home. Whatever the case may be, the freedom that comes with being a digital entrepreneur is alluring. Being a successful digital entrepreneur isn’t easy. If it were, we would all choose to do it. But you are reading this article because you have chosen to go down this path, or are already walking down it and want to make sure you are doing it right. This article covers the basic essentials. But remember, everyone’s journey is different. There truly is no one size fits all, and a lot of entrepreneurship is trial and error. But by utilizing these points, and implementing a good branding and marketing strategy, you will be well on your way to becoming a successful entrepreneur.
